What are ice dams and how do they form?

When warm air in the building or attic rises, it will concentrate at the highest points of the roof.  This heat will cause the snow and ice to melt from the underside.  Since typical snowstorms are accompanied by subfreezing temperatures, the melted snow and ice will refreeze at the edge of the roof, where there is little heat to keep it in a liquid state.  This refreezing water is what creates the ice dams.

Ice dams will build-up over time and trap the melting snow & ice on the roof. This trapped water often finds weak areas in the roof and begins to leak into the structure causing water damage, mold & mildew to form, as well as create a heavy load ripping the gutter down or causing the roof to sag. In addition to that, the large icicles that are created can fall from the building, injuring people and damage property.

Delta-Therm's self-regulating or mineral insulated roof deicing cables "heat tape" are used to prevent these ice dams from forming on roofs or in the gutters or downspouts.  These heat trace cables provide a continuous drain path for the melting snow and ice, eliminated the problems associated with ice dams.
